Indian Students Shift Focus as Overseas Enrolments Decline
The number of Indian students pursuing higher education abroad has declined for the first time in three years, reflecting changing global education trends and stricter immigration policies across major destinations.
According to recent Ministry of External Affairs data, overseas student enrolments dropped nearly 6% in 2025, decreasing from 1.33 million in 2024 to approximately 1.2 million.
Education experts attribute the decline to rising tuition fees, stricter visa regulations, higher living costs, and increased financial scrutiny in countries such as Canada, the USA, the UK, and Australia.
At the same time, Indian students are increasingly exploring alternative destinations including Germany, France, New Zealand, Ireland, Singapore, and South Korea due to affordable education and better post-study work opportunities.
Industry analysts say Indian students are now making more cautious and value-focused decisions while planning overseas education.
